Local Priorities Mobile phone theft Message

I wanted to provide an update regarding Mobile phone theft, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey.

I just wanted to share with members of the community some recent good news about our efforts to combat mobile phone theft in the West End.

Last week we had 6 arrests in 2 days of mobile phone thieves by our Officers in plain clothes and I have put a summary below:

Officers noticed two suspects stealing from an elderly females bag on Oxford Street by Oxford Circus. Officers stopped the two, recovered the phone and returned it owner. The Officers also got a round of applause from the public! The victim was very happy and wrote a thank you email. Both suspects were charged and remanded – 10 weeks each in prison

Officers were patrolling Charing Cross road en route to Oxford Street, they noticed two suspects and followed them to Montagu Pyke Pub. As soon as they entered officers witnessed the suspects steal a phone via distraction theft. Officers stopped them and they were searched. The stolen phone was hidden down the top of a female suspect. The phone was restored to owner and he was able to get to Oasis Concert!

Officers patrolling Oxford Street, noticed two females acting suspiciously. Officers observed and witnessed them trying to steal from Tourist backpack. Both arrested and Charged/Remanded. Both suspects are on our radar from being part of larger Bulgarian Pickpocket organised crime group.

Your West End Town Centre team utilise a range of tactics including uniformed and plain clothes patrols and we are focused and dedicated on mobile phone theft and targeting those out to commit crime in our area.
